As a Bio Major who has completed several Science Courses, I write lab reports frequently, so prior to this assignment, I definitely had some experiences on writing a lab report. For this project, I think I had a high familiarity with the structure of the lab report. I already knew how to do each component of a lab report, so when working with my team to write the abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, future directions, and references, I believed I knew what I was doing. However, this was actually my first psychology lab report since our lab report heavily revolved around a psychology experiment that I had very little to no experience of. This assignment definitely allowed me to branch into other scientific disciplines and the scientific writing behind them.
When working on the lab report, there weren’t really many problems during development; however, the planning/setup for our experiment was definitely the biggest hurdle for this project, since it was a hassle to find a time when everyone was available and a place where the experiment could actually work. In the end, we thought that during class was actually the best time for our experiment since we were all there, and because our classmates (Subjects) knew that we were doing an experiment, they would be more willing to participate.
I think the teamwork aspect of this assignment was a unique situation for me, since most of the lab reports I wrote were written entirely on my own; I thought it was nice to be able to relax the workload by dividing our responsibilities across different sections. It was also nice to have each other review our work, almost like it was a constant “Peer review”. I think since my team members all had experience on writing a lab report, we were able to write an excellent lab report with very few to no problems along the way, however in general I think writing a lab report by yourself is slightly better since you have more control over what your writing and you would avoid the risk of having a team that doesn’t know what they’re doing. I think since all of our team members actually knew how to write a lab report, we didn’t really have any striking differences, and our lab report was uniform throughout.
If I were to have the chance to redo this piece, I would do a different experiment on a scientific background I’m more comfortable with. (Natural sciences)
