Before completing this task, I had no prior experience of making a formal memorandum before. Most correspondence I did was mostly sending emails to professors, supervisors, or administrators, and these were usually less structured and more casual in tone. Writing a memo, however, required another way, since it was more about clarity, structured organization, professionalism, and writing to an audience with a defined reason.

During this process, I became aware that I am able to adjust my writing style to fit academic and formal rules. I realized structure has great significance in professional writing, particularly when pointing out problems and making solution proposals. Also, I discovered I focus too much on content and ideas, and need to be intentional about tone and formatting so I can meet the requirements of the memorandum category.

Altogether, I believe in assignments I reached standards by describing campus situations clearly, giving context as needed, and making practical recommendations about the situation of CUNY’s allocation of money. I followed the format as required. If I get a chance to revise the memorandum, I will try to shorten my argument more and make the language sound even more neutral and administrative. This assignment was helpful to me for understanding the importance of memo writing to be effective and practical communication in academic or professional environments.
